Original Works

My interest in painting landscapes is in the stories it can tell. It is always shaped by history, from cosmic and seismic events to animal plant and human activity. What is clear is that the earth is subject to change. Geologists, anthropologists and historians can shed light on some of those stories, but the inevitability of change itself can give rise to anxiety about the unknown future. Viewing the land with curiosity and passion helps me to feel a sense of belonging and involvement.

These paintings have been made using rocks and other materials collected while out walking, or simply collected from my garden or other visited locations. In the gathering of these materials I was wanting to hold close some sense of the place where they were found, but when making the paintings the challenge of creating exciting events with colour and texture was more prominent.
